As you know, the COVID-19 situation across Europe has worsened over recent weeks. Europe has seen a dramatic rise in COVID-19 cases in the past few days that have your government considering the implementation of additional measures to prevent further spread of the virus.
As a result of these negative trends, we’ve been contacted by some of the countries that are part of the IBSA Goalball Championships (Group B) who have stated they are experiencing travel restrictions that are in place through January 2021 or they anticipate travel restrictions will be in place by January 2021 and would make them not able to compete. Additionally, a couple of countries are not comfortable with traveling at a time when the pandemic situation is worsening.
Every country has expressed to us concerns about what happens if they become ill while in Finland with the main concerns being the additional expense of staying in Finland and the impact on the tournament results and the impact on where they could fall in relegation if they lose the ability to compete because of illness.
Because of these inputs and the overall safety of everyone involved, LOC and IBSA Goalball have discussed together the postponement option and agreed to postpone the January tournament and work to find other set of dates when conditions may improve.
